The New York Times broke the news that Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel for Donald Trump, has agreed to testify to the January 6 Committee.

Cipollone reportedly “repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump’s activities on January 6 and in the days that preceded” and is considered by some to be the ‘missing link’ in the investigation of Trump’s actions on Jan. 6.

After Cassidy Hutchinson testified that Cipollone warned her not to allow Trump to go up to the Capitol on Jan. 6 as Vice President Mike Pence was set to certify the election results before Congress, the Committee once again subpoenaed the lawyer.

On the morning of Jan. 6, before Trump’s rally, she said she saw Cipollone near the White House. “Mr. Cipollone said something to the effect of, ‘Please make sure we don’t go up to the Capitol, Cassidy, keep in touch with me. We’re going to get charged with every crime imaginable if we make that movement happen.’

Cipollone, who many former administration officials credit with helping to prevent then-President Donald Trump from taking legally questionable actions in the months around the 2020 presidential election, has long been considered a key witness by the committee. He has resisted talking further with the committee after previously sitting for a closed-door interview on April 13.
Cipollone is worried about lawyer-client privilege but the Jan. 6 Committee has agreed to stick to only certain topics which wouldn’t endanger that.
