President Donald Trump was secretly whisked out of Turkey aboard a smaller military aircraft last month after U.S. intelligence identified a serious Iranian threat, according to reporting that sharply contradicts the public explanation given for his departure.
The extraordinary security operation took place after Trump attended the NATO summit in Ankara. Publicly, Trump boarded an older presidential aircraft in front of the traveling press corps. But according to The Washington Post, that aircraft was being used as a decoy while the president was secretly transferred to a U.S. military C-32A jet. The reported switch involved an unusual piece of airport equipment: a catering truck. Trump was moved from the presidential aircraft inside the catering vehicle, allowing him to reach the smaller military plane without alerting journalists who were watching the presidential departure.
HuffPost White House reporter SV Date told fellow journalists and White House officials: ‘Trump was ready to let you die while he secretly made his escape.’
The deception went further. Members of the traveling press corps—and apparently some White House personnel—were left believing that Trump remained aboard the original Air Force One aircraft. That plane subsequently departed Turkey with members of the administration and press aboard, serving as a decoy.
Officials did not brief the journalists aboard the plane about the threat posed by Iran or tell them that the aircraft had been deemed unsafe for Trump.
‘Trump is a coward. He endangered their lives to protect himself. It was his incompetence that lost the war to Iran and his corruption that got the Qatari jet in the first place,’ wrote one poster on X.
The reason for the elaborate maneuver was reportedly a credible threat from Iran. U.S. and Israeli intelligence had identified concerns about an attack targeting Trump or his aircraft, prompting the Secret Service to take extraordinary precautions. No attack occurred.
The revelation raises questions about Trump’s public statements surrounding the flight. Trump had presented his use of the older presidential aircraft as a matter of preference and nostalgia, while the administration maintained that the newer aircraft was being sent ahead for other purposes. The subsequent reporting indicates that the president’s actual movements were considerably different from what the public—and the press traveling with him—had been led to believe.
Trump’s decision to conceal his movements can be understood in the context of presidential security: revealing that the president had changed aircraft could potentially have made him easier to target. But the extraordinary operation also creates a striking contrast between the administration’s public account and what reportedly happened behind the scenes.
In the end, the scene resembled something from a political thriller: Trump appeared to board Air Force One, disappeared from view inside a catering vehicle, transferred to a smaller military aircraft and quietly flew out of Turkey—while journalists who were supposed to be traveling with the president remained aboard the decoy plane.
