We consider ourselves a champion packer.
Compression bags? Check.
Airtags to track our luggage? Check.
And we can squeeze a week’s worth of clothes into a carry-on. (Okay, a really over-stuffed bag, but still…)
But a Reddit thread had a few genius tips that we hadn’t even heard of.
1) Ziplock bags
We pack our toiletries in a ziplock bag but one ‘Redditor’ recommended them for snacks, any loose items, wet items (ie swimsuits), and throwing a few extra in your bag for trinkets you might pick up on the trip. They won’t add much weight or bulk to your luggage either.
2) Laundry detergent sheets
If you’re trying to stretch your wardrobe — and who isn’t on a trip? — bringing those laundry detergent sheets makes washing clothes easier, and the sheets are much easier to pack than any kind of liquid.
3) Empty reusable bag
Bring a small foldable bag recommends one user. “You can just fold it and put it in a purse or daypack. It can double as a beach bag or be used for grocery/snack runs. I always bring one when I travel.” Brilliant hack.
4)Dry bag
Got wet clothes from the rain? Taking soft-sided luggage through inclement weather? You’ll need a dry bag. Not only does it protect your electronics and dry clothes, it makes a handy laundry. Listen up:
“Fill the dry bag (with dirty clothes) with warm water, add detergent, close, and knead/agitate around for a while. The agitation is what really cleans the clothes, and that is something that is difficult to achieve (just) in a sink. When done, let the soapy water out and rinse the clothes. Hang the dry bag along with the clothes to dry it, so it’s ready to use again.”
5) Door stopper
Throw a door stopper in your luggage next trip, for an added layer of security in any hotel room and especially when you’re staying in hostels. Check out travel-friendly door stoppers on Amazon here. Peace of mind for only 8 bucks.
Editor’s tip:
If you use a silk pillowcase at home (and you should be!) sausage-roll one of them and squeeze it into your luggage. It’ll help you sleep in a new hotel/Airbnb and you’ll want to protect your skin and hair while you’re away as well. We like the BLISSY brand (see our review here.)
