Niki Lauda, arguably one Formula Ones’ most famous drivers, was laid to rest at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in his home city of Vienna on Wednesday morning. Attended by celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger (with his girlfriend Heather Milligan) F1 past and present drivers, along with fans who stood outside the Cathedral in the rain, it was a somber day.
In a touching moment, Birgit Lauda, the widow of Niki Lauda, and his sons Mathias Lauda and Lucas Lauda placed one of the famous racer’s helmets on top of his coffin.
Current Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, who dedicated his win Sunday to Lauda, stayed close by the coffin for the ceremony. He will be missed.
