Star Trek legend Nichelle Nichols, who died last month at 89,  is set to have her ashes blasted into deep space as part of a special ‘Enterprise mission.’

Lieutenant Uhura joins other departed Star Trekers’ including James Doohan (Scotty), Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Chapel), the TV series creator Gene Roddenberry, and visual-effects wiz Douglas Trumbull on this mission.

A ‘sampling’ of her ashes and DNA will fly ‘beyond the moon’ as it will ‘reach the final frontier as early as this year’ says NASA.

As her son said: ‘I’m sure she would have much preferred to go on the shuttle but this is a pretty close second.’
