As a young man attending Hampton University in Virginia, Shelton Haynes knew he had a passion for social work and helping communities grow. Still, as he began working in government agencies, he wondered if he’d be able to bring that passion to his work. Fortunately, with his work as CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, he was well-positioned to help the small island community of 12,000 in the East River of New York City thrive and grow.

Studying social work at Hampton University, Shelton Haynes completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology, then returned to his home in New York. At that time, he began his career by working with social and government agencies. Then, he joined Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation in 2016, moving first into the Chief Operations Officer and then into the CEO position.

Shelton Haynes Has A Big Heart

“I have a social worker’s heart,” Shelton Haynes stated in a recent interview. “I thought that would be my path, but life took me here. Social work is still my calling at the end of the day. I want to ensure that we enrich and provide better resources for young people in our community.”

Towards that end, Shelton Haynes has spent a great deal of effort in improving the Roosevelt Island Youth Center, which he sees as his legacy project. Other projects on the island have included a wide range of developments as well as making sure that all changes to the island are happening in a sustainable way so that the island and its history are preserved long into the future without hindering economic progress.

Outside of RIOC

When he’s spending time outside of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation’s offices, Shelton Haynes enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also takes time to mentor youth between ages 12 and 17 through the Children’s Aid Society in Harlem. His understanding of the impact that community and enrichment can have on the island’s youth is helping to keep the island’s community spirit by investing in its youth.

When working with youth in Harlem, Shelton Haynes makes sure to tell them about a range of initiatives that could be helpful in their futures. In return, the teens feel comfortable discussing any issues that happen to be on their minds, gaining a sounding board that can help them achieve their goals in life.

Community Matters

“We talk about current events, some politics, and everyday adolescent obstacles that they go through,” Shelton Haynes explains of his involvement with the group. “It is very fulfilling, helping youths through the Children’s Aid Society each week; it’s like social work. I mentor these young people, hear them out, and help them navigate challenging situations. We need more of that.”

With strong plans for the future of Roosevelt Island, Shelton Haynes has not forgotten the island’s human future – its children. Focused on creating a better environment where they can succeed and avoid trouble, Shelton Haynes and the Roosevelt Island Youth Center are lifting not only the island’s physical development but its human development as well.
