Alexis Smith was crowned Miss Kansas last month, but that’s not the big news; it’s what she said in her acceptance speech that has gone viral.
When she was asked how she would use her powers for good (basically) Ms. Smith replied:
Saying her vision was to “eliminate” unhealthy and abusive relationships, she added this zinger:
“Matter of fact, some of you out in this audience saw me very emotional, because my abuser is here today,” Smith responded. “But that’s not going to stop me from being on this Miss Kansas and from representing as the next Miss Kansas. Because I, and my community, deserve healthy relationships.”
The brave young woman is now making the rounds of talk shows, talking about domestic abuse.
“You just stood up for all women. Thank you,” a person wrote on Instagram. “I’m sorry for what you went through. And thank you for speaking up.”
