Updated:
Republican Kevin McCarthy has now lost a third vote speaker on Tuesday after a mutiny in his own party which left him without the necessary votes.
The House can’t kick off the new Congress or swear in new members until a speaker is elected.
Rep. Jim Jordan has been nominated as an alternative, but he doesn’t have the votes either.
Stay tuned.
If the first ballot fails to provide a speaker, lawmakers will continue to vote until a candidate receives a majority. Members can vote for different candidates on each ballot.
If the opposition doesn’t garner enough votes, expect chaos in the party.
