Photos and videos of US Border agents on horseback whipping Haitian refugees with their horse reins and charging at them, so that even little children were forced to fall back into the water, are all over the internet.

Tuesday Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he was “horrified.”

“I was horrified by what I saw,” Mayorkas told CNN’s Brianna Keilar on “New Day.” “I’m going to let the investigation run its course. But the pictures that I observed troubled me profoundly. That defies all of the values that we seek to instill in our people.”
As thousands of migrants — many of them Haitian — have gathered under the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas, driven to leave their country by a devastating earthquake and deteriorating conditions, they are looking for a better life in the US.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) described the scenes as “a stain on our country.”

“It doesn’t matter if a Democrat or Republican is President, our immigration system is designed for cruelty towards and dehumanization of immigrants,” she wrote on Twitter. “Immigration should not be a crime.”
