Actor Richard Chamberlain, 90, died a day before his birthday this weekend, his publicist confirmed.

Famous for his roles in Dr. KildareThe Thorn Birds, and Shogun, Chamberlain died from stroke complications on Saturday in Waimanalo, Hawaii.

 

 

At the height of his popularity as Dr. Kildare, he was receiving more than  12,000 letters a week from

 

 

Chamberlain’s longtime partner Martin Rabbett, 71, made a heartfelt statement for the Golden Globe-winning actor, also confirming his death. “Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us,” said Rabbett. “Love never dies. And our love is under his wings, lifting him to his next great adventure.”

Though Chamberlain was a star since the ’60, he didn’t come out as gay until 2003 when he published his memoir, ‘Shattered Love.’
