Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release deal, aiming to end a 15-month conflict that began in October 2023.
The agreement initiates a 42-day ceasefire, during which Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, primarily women, children, and injured individuals, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
The first phase involves Israel withdrawing troops from frontlines and allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Further negotiations during the ceasefire will address the release of the remaining hostages and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The deal, brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, has been welcomed by the international community as a significant step toward peace in the region.
However, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir opposes the deal, emphasizing that Hamas must be eradicated for Israel to leave Gaza.
The ceasefire is expected to facilitate the return of displaced Palestinians and the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza under international supervision.
