Sir Michael Gambon, the esteemed British stage and film actor, has died at 82.

Famous in his later years for playing Dumbledore in the  Harry Potter films, he was knighted by the Queen in 1998.

 

Gambon died “peacefully” in the hospital late Wednesday evening, his representative confirmed in a statement.

Twice nominated for Emmy Awards, he won four BAFTA Awards as well as the Richard Harris Award from the British Independent Film Awards, an honor that acknowledges an actor who has, during the course of their career, ‘contributed significantly to British film.’
