After being trapped for over 24 hours, a couple stuck in the I-95 winter storm nightmare saw a bakery truck ahead. Like many of the stranded motorists, they hadn’t eaten for an entire day.

Casey Holihan and her husband, John Noe, decided to call the number for Schmidt Baking Company in Baltimore and explain the predicament.

“We were starving,” said Holihan, 23, who at the time was at a standstill near Quantico. “People around us were very much struggling as well. We could hear kids crying.”

What happened next surprised them. Less than 20 minutes later, one of the owners of the bakery, Chuck Paterakis, called the couple and instructed them to tell the driver to offer everyone two bakery products, so there would be enough to feed numerous people.

“It was an easy decision,” Paterakis said. If he had been stuck out there on the road with no food, he added, “I would want someone to offer their products.”

The couple then started distributing bakery products to other motorists and others joined in.

“Everyone was so thankful,” Holihan said.
