Sports Illustrated magazine just named soccer player Megan Rapinoe as their Sportsperson of the Year. As we all remember, she was the co-captain of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team this year and led the team to victory at the Women’s World Cup in France. Breaking barriers everywhere she goes, Rapinoe is the first openly gay person to win this accolade. In the accompanying article, Rapinoe said she did it to expand the “narrow view” of what it means to be LGBTQ and an athlete, in a publication perceived to be “only for heterosexual males,”

Her reign isn’t without controversy — she and her teammates sued the U.S. Soccer Federation for equal pay for women teams, and when she was asked if the team would make the ritual visit tot he White House, she famously stated:

“I’m not going to the f**king White House. We’re not gonna be invited. I doubt it.”

Hero.
