All public schools in New York City are closed today and there are delays at most of the local airports — Newark, La Guardia and Kennedy — with reports of nearly 1,800 flights canceled between the three airports.

With parts of New England threatened with  up to 18 inches of snow, most of the cities are at a stand still. The governors of Massachusetts and Connecticut urged people not to travel unless necessary and told nonessential state employees not to come to work.

Reports of ‘Thundersnow’ are rare, said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s office in Taunton, Mass., adding “It’s a thunderstorm with snow instead of rain.”
