Well-known French brand, La Roche-Posay has a line of cosmetic products including a variety of serums for various skin concerns. I tried the 1.01 fluid ounce Hyalu B5 Serum ($39.99) for hydration benefits (my skin is very dry). It is an anti-aging, pure hyaluronic concentrate for all skin types.

The serum also has other ingredients like the Madecassoside plant derivative for nourishing skin; Glycerin for hydration; Vitamin B5 for smoothness and moisture; Dimethicone as a skin protectant; and La Roche-Posay Prebiotic Thermal Water with minerals, trace elements, and a high concentration of selenium, a natural antioxidant.

The serum’s goal is to leave your skin feeling plump and repair fine lines by replenishing the natural moisture barrier. So what is hyaluronic acid—the main ingredient—and why do we care? Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body, notably in your skin, eyes, and joints.

Its superpower is that it can hold onto moisture and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This is essential for keeping skin plump, joints cushioned, and tissues hydrated.

As we age our natural levels drop and lead to dry skin, stiff joints, and fine lines. That’s why hyaluronic acid is in everything from skincare serums to joint supplements. It’s like a moisture magnet that helps you stay smooth and feeling good.

So does La Roche-Posay’s Hyalu B5 Serum do the job? I used it twice a day for a week applying a bit more to my face and neck. (Directions say three to four drops but that seems too minimal to cover the areas.) The consistency is a bit sticky, but it absorbs quickly.

I really couldn’t tell any difference in my skin after using this serum for a week. It’s very light and absorbs quickly but I didn’t really feel enhanced plumpness or hydration (and I use heavy creams).

Conversely, I’ve used Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum (which is pricey at $85) but it really feels hydrating, and I can tell as soon and I put it on. I may have drier skin than most people, and to be fair the La Roche-Posay’s Hyalu B5 Serum may work for people that don’t have dry skin. It’s more affordable and the brand has a good reputation so it might be worth a try.
