New York travelers may soon have a faster—and greener—way to reach Manhattan. Joby Aviation’s all-electric air taxi is designed to whisk passengers from JFK Airport to the city in just minutes, avoiding the notorious traffic that can turn the trip into an hour or more by car.
Unlike traditional helicopters, Joby’s electric aircraft produces zero in-flight emissions and is significantly quieter, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative for short urban flights. The aircraft takes off and lands vertically, much like a helicopter, but runs entirely on electric power.
If all goes as planned, the service could transform airport transfers, offering visitors a quick, scenic ride into Manhattan while reducing both noise pollution and carbon emissions.
The electric aircraft rises from the ground like a helicopter, its six propellers facing the sky. Then, after a presto-change-o moment that positions them to face forward, it flies like an airplane.
The aircraft was put through its paces on a test flight from Kennedy International Airport that a spokesperson said was “proof that the future of advanced air mobility is no longer a Jetsons-esque fantasy — it’s already here.”
