In a break from the Catholic Church’s official teaching, Pope Francis called for the creation of civil union laws for same-sex couples.

This was revealed in a new documentary, ‘Franceso’ which premieres this week in Rome and later in the U.S.

“What we have to create is a civil union law,” he said.

In the documentary, according to the Catholic News Agency, Francis says same-sex couples should be “legally covered.”

He added, “homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family.”

“They’re children of God and have a right to a family,” the pope said. “Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
