Cue the Canadian National Anthem: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country will ban single-use plastic items by 2021. Think plastic bags — which mercifully have been phased out in many cities — straws, plastic eating cutlery or stirring sticks.

Reportedly, England plans to ban such plastics next year, and the European Parliament has passed its own single-use plastics ban. Why? Humans finally woke up to the damaging amount of plastic that’s ending up in the world’s oceans, with an estimated 1 million birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals worldwide injured or killed when they mistake plastic for food. Even marine life at the very bottom of oceans has been found to have plastic in its system. Enough.
