First Lady Michelle Obama made a controversial choice not to wear a headscarf in Saudi Arabia, where women are treated like second class citizens, and ignited the Islamic world. In a country where women are forbidden to drive, enroll in higher education or to travel without a man, and required to veil their face and hair with a niqab, her choice made a brave statement.

In Saudi Arabia with her husband to pay respects to the late King Abdullah, the first lady arrived in loose clothing that covered her arms – also part of the required dress code — but did not go along with the rest of the restrictive policy.
