For my 7th grade Home Ec project I embroidered ‘I Hate To Cook ‘ (credit to Peg Bracken) on a apron. To this day, my idea of cooking involves heating something in the microwave. Sure, I had a few recipes I could muddle through, such as spaghetti, but envied people who could whip up something on the stove. A gadget girl from way back, I wondered if this new smart pan, the Pantelligent could teach me to cook?

A bluetooth-paired pan, that guides you through every step of the way in real time (you just download the app), it’s food meets science. How does it do it? Easy – your phone pairs with the pan which has a temperature sensor inside, the electronics talk to the app, the app monitors the temperature and tells you (with on-screen and spoken notifications, just like Siri) when the heats too high or too low, when to flip, stir or add the next ingredient and even compliments you at the end of successful job: ‘CONGRATULATIONS!’

We started with the ‘simple salmon’ (recommended ) — something we’d never attempted before — but followed the easy instructions (season with salt and pepper, add butter and oil to the pan), waited till the pan said to add the salmon (skin side up), and then flipped when it said it was done. It  was like having a seasoned (get it?) chef directing us in the kitchen. Much to our delight, it was delish! Next we’re going to try a steak, which you can program to taste, ie. rare to well-done (simply enter the thickness of meat and approximate weight), or maybe the Mushroom Risotto. We’re checking out the recipes on the app for inspiration. Maybe we’ll even throw a small dinner party and cook. What a concept.
