Not only are the medals at this year’s Olympics in Paris inspired by the Eiffel Tower — but they each contain an original piece of the 19th-century landmark so winning athletes take home a ‘veritable piece of Paris.’

But not to worry – they didn’t just chip off part of the famous tower. Apparently, after each renovation, the discarded pieces are stored at a secret location.

For the medals, the Eiffel Tower’s distinctive dark brown paint was cleaned off, and the pieces cut into hexagons before being embossed with the Paris 2024 logo.
