You remember Nikki Haley as Trump’s US ambassador to the United Nations, and then South Carolina Republican Gov.

Tuesday she announced in a short video that she will run for president in 2024, becoming the first major rival to challenge former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination.

“The Washington establishment has failed us over and over and over again. It’s time for a new generation of leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose,” Haley said in a campaign video.

As the first opponent to Trump – who is expected to announce he is running for President again — she faces the wrath of her old boss who had accused her of being ‘disloyal’ if she chose to run.

While ostensibly remaining in Trump’s good graces, she did criticize Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol when she said his actions “will be judged harshly by history.”

“He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him,” she said.

Her move will likely embolden other politicians who have considered running, including Ron DeSantis.
