Mary Quant, the English fashion designer who came to epitomize the style of London’s Swinging Sixties, died today at 93.

With her distinctive look – Vidal Sasson bob, huge painted eyes, fake freckles, and dressed in her short colorful skirts almost always paired with boots, she turned fashion on its head.

Her boutique called ‘Bazaar’ on London’s King’s Road, became the epicenter of fashion, born from the streets, not the atelier.

Just 10 years later, Mary Quant was a global brand. In 1966 she was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to British exports.

And she will also be remembered as the ‘mother of the miniskirt.’
