We can’t decide between the Potato latke with smoked salmon, poached egg, avocado, mixed greens ($16) or maybe something from the extensive waffle menu? Waffles and short ribs? Or the ‘Le Royale’, wagyu burger, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mama’s cottage fries ($18)?

What’s a reviewer to do? Order it all. We’re trying out the new Mama Shelter LA hotel and restaurant, located in Hollywood, just close enough to the action on Selma avenue.

With a European vibe and a hipster crowd, it’s the new ‘in’ spot for those in the know. You walk in through the bar (above) with colorful chalk artwork on the ceiling, but as tempted as you may be, keep going to the restaurant. It’ll be worth it.

The service is friendly without being obsequious and the waiters are happy to share their menu favorites. We ordered sparkly ‘Mama-mosas’ to start which took about 10 minutes to land on our table, too slow for an uncrowded restaurant. But the brunch menu items made up for it, especially the Wagu beef burger with was cooked exactly as our companion liked it. If you love waffles with almost anything you can think of on top, then this is your place. There are also plenty of veggie options, for those so inclined.

And by all means order a coffee from Phil, the barista who has it down to an art. Since our visit, their lovely rooftop has opened for drinks, lunch and dinner. Mama says we’ll just have to go back.
