We don’t need to tell you how hot it is out there, but in Phoenix, the heat wave has led to the cancellation of nearly 50 flights. With temperatures hitting a high of 120 degrees, American Airlines said it was forced to ground dozens of planes at of Sky Harbor International Airport.

As it turns out, smaller jets can’t take off in extreme heat, though larger aircraft (think 747s) can operate up to temperatures of 127 degrees. Regional aircraft like the ones that service AA’s short routes have a maximum operating temperature of 1118 degrees.

Global warming anyone?
