We know what you’re thinking …we could adopt a direwolf, as depicted in Game of Thrones!? Thankfully, that’s a ‘no’ — it is a fictional canine. But that hasn’t stopped fans of the show from buying the closest dog in the animal kingdom, the Husky.

This alarming trend has lead to a rush on Huskies who are later dumped at shelters when owners discover how much work a large dog can be …and that a real-world dog doesn’t follow orders like a direwolf.

Our favorite GOT’s character and dog owner, Peter Drinklage spoke out recently about this very issue:

“Please, to all of Game of Thrones‘ many wonderful fans, we understand that due to the direwolves’ huge popularity, many folks are going out and buying huskies,” Dinklage said to PETA  “Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs. Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, ALWAYS, adopt from a shelter.”

This isn’t the first time fans have coveted a movie dog, with disastrous results. According to PETA, the popularity of Legally Blonde, 101 Dalmatians and Men in Black  lead to similar surges in sales of a movie’s featured breed, quickly followed by an uptick in shelters of the same breed.

Remember, adopt don’t shop.
