Thousand of Ukrainians are fleeing their war-torn country, many traveling East by train.

Those who want to take haven in Germany are getting a warm welcome at the Berlin stop where hundreds of German families have gathered to take in the exhausted families.

First, they are given food and drink, there are medical teams, translators, volunteers and organizers to help them.

And the crowds of Germans are holding up signs, offering places to stay: “Can host two people! Short or long-term,” says one. “Big room. One-three people. Children welcome too! For as long as you want,” reads another.

There’s a round of applause as a man with a megaphone asks if anyone can take 13 people – and someone steps forward. It spans all age groups — there’s one grandmother in her 80’s holding a sign offering “One room for mother and child.”
