Barbie has their ‘Career Dolls, including our favorite, President and V.Prez and not to be outdone, American Girl has just announced that the American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year is …wait for it… a Chilean-American Martian astronaut.

11-year-old Luciana Vega dreams of being the first person to walk on Mars. Right now, the aspiring Luciana is in Space Camp, as the accompanying book tells her story.

For the first time, we have a doll for girls (or boys) that encourages studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) which will be key skills in the future. (Editor’s note: girls historically drop out of STEM courses due to lack of encouragement, gender bias, and yes, a dearth of role models. )

NASA has dubbed young girls of this modern age the ‘Mars Generation’ so Luciana’s dream may not be that far off.

Perhaps introducee her to the Elon Musk doll at Space X?
