Millions of children around the world don’t go to school, whether because of poverty, war strife, child labor, early marriage, discrimination, conflict or emergencies.
Education advocate Shakira hopes to draw attention to the problem by delivering the world’s biggest petition on education; #UpForSchool to UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown on the eve of the 2015 United Nations General Assembly.
Over 10 million people around the world have signed their names to demand world leaders take action and deliver on a promise they made in 2000 of education for every child.
Shakira also shared her thoughts on the incredible feat, “Today, I have been given the amazing honor of delivering the #UpForSchool petition to world leaders meeting at the United Nation. 10 million signatures, the world’s largest petition on education. 59 million kids are out of school; every year that passes millions of kids will be born into the same cycle of poverty. We can be the society to eradicate poverty and bring education for all. But we need to move faster, we need commitment from world leaders to put education at the top of the agenda. Access to education is the only way to secure a stable and prosperous world, we have no time to lose.”
