Ever had an egg on a pizza for breakfast? It’s one of the popular brunch items at Angelina’s Pizzeria restaurant in the OC. so we figured we had to try it.

The airy eatery in Irvine is genuine Italian; they even fly the dough in from the home country, along with the San Marzano tomatoes, and mozzarella from a cheesemonger in Napoli. While there are many brunch options, including a standard American breakfast, we had to have the pizza with the aforementioned egg.

Perched sunny side up on a Mozzarella di Bufala pizza, the breakfast pie comes with a choice of sausage, guanciale or spinach, which is fired in a huge 900-degree wood-burning oven. Not surprisingly, the pizza curst was delicious — chewy yet light – and the egg melted into the mozzarella and cooked spinach to create a dazzling taste experience. ($14.) Paired with a mimosa, it made for a perfect brunch.

Our tablemate went for the more conventional Calzone, pizza dough folded and stuffed with mozzarella mushroom and baked ham, with a light pomodoro sauce. He pronounced it ‘scrumptious’ and had enough to take home for another meal.($18.)

People beside us were enjoying the roasted octopus salad and the Ravioli Burro e Salvia. We decided on a traditional tiramisu which naturally, is made on the premises and was one the best we’ve ever had.

We’ll be back.
