La Casa del Zorro, located just beyond the Anza- Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California, in Borrego Springs, has had a make-over, and the grand old dame (originally opened in 1937) is an oasis in the desert.

Beautiful grounds, luxurious rooms, many with fireplaces, numerous pools, a fitness center with all the latest equipment, a spa and Yoga lessons on site, and a ‘Foxy ‘ Bar, it’s a welcome respite after trekking or ATV-ing in the desert.

Our room, overlooking a pool.

Deservedly famous for its ‘dark sky’ designation (though it was foggy both nights we stayed there) on a clear night they say you can see the heavens like never before.

For lunch, sit outside at the Cantina and enjoy reasonably-priced and delicious food and before dinner stop by the Fox Den Bar (the Fox is the symbol of Casa Del Zorro) for a cocktail. The bartender knows how to make a perfect martini.

For a real treat book a table at the Butterfield Room, with candlelit tables and exquisite food. We recommend the surf and turf. Closed Monday and Tuesday and by all means, book a reservation ahead of time. There’s nothing like a dusty day in the desert, a jump in the pool and then a 5-star meal by candlelight.
