This is one divorce that is set to have more drama and twists and turns than any scripted Hollywood movie.

Not surprising in the least, given that its two leading protagonists are two of Tinseltown’s biggest stars.

The end of one of Hollywood’s most controversial love stories came to a screeching halt Monday when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt for “the health of her family”.

The actress filed papers citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split and asked for physical custody of the couple’s six children – Maddox, age 15; Pax, aged 12; Zahara, aged 11; Shiloh, aged 10; and twins Vivienne and Knox, aged eight.

Since then, the tabloids and gossip sites have rubbed their hands with utter glee as information is “leaked” about Pitt, effectively tarnishing his Nice Guy reputation.

Pitt is a pot head, a drunk, has anger issues, and had an affair with actress Marion Cotillard… apparently, if the “source” info was to be believed.

Jolie, has always been known to a master manipulator of the press — she never needed a publicist because she had weekly glossies wrapped around her perfectly manicured finger.

Unfortunately, it is now Pitt who is bearing the brunt of the wrath of his soon-to-be ex-wife.

The 51-year-old actor is said to be none too pleased about becoming tabloid fodder.

TMZ reports that he is angry at his estranged wife for allegedly spinning stories about him being a potential risk to their kids because of “anger issues and substance abuse”.

The source added: “But after the rhetoric that has been put out over the past 24 hours about his drinking and doing drugs, along with the completely untrue rumors about him having an affair with his co-star Marion Cotillard, he is hoping to be able to turn the volume down.”

There is said to be no doubt in Pitt’s mind where the vitriol is coming from — Team Jolie, with a source citing  that while people close to Jolie have been going after Pitt in the press, he is making sure that his friends and colleagues say nothing negative about his estranged wife, reports the Daily Mail.

“People close to him specifically avoided criticizing her while trying to stay positive in defending him at Brad’s request,” explains the source.

Pitt has apparently pleaded with Jolie for her to handle the divorce “like adults” and that he wanted to keep the divorce under wraps for the benefit of their children.

And what of the kids and the ugly custody battle on the horizon?

Sources tell In Touch Weekly, that the actor will not go down without a fight and plans on seeking  joint physical custody of his six children with Jolie.

“Brad will ask for shared custody,” a source exclusively reveals to In Touch.

“Their children will always be their chief priority,” a friend tells In Touch. . “They will keep up a happy-mom-and-dad facade for those kids.”

So what went wrong between the pair who wed two years ago at their French estate Chateau Miraval?

The answer would be was anything ever really right between the two of them, with incessant weekly reports spanning years and years detailing their ferocious fights and documenting Brad’s biggest regret — leaving Jennifer Aniston, his then-wife, for Jolie.

In Touch is reporting  that the pair had one major blow out that led to this.

The mag reports:

“Brad’s leaving for the Adriatic coast [in early September] prompted a fight with his wife that has sealed the fate of their marriage,”a friend exclusively tells In Touch, explaining that lingering tensions exploded when she wanted him to spend the last few precious days of summer with her and the kids at Miraval, their estate in France.

But Brad was deadset on the trip to the Croatian coast, and things went from bad to worse. “As Brad headed out the door, Angelina was in tears.”

Angelina also made it clear she’s still smarting over a fight In Touch reported on in August that was sparked by Brad’s sexually charged scenes with Marion Cotillard, his co-star in the upcoming 1940s spy thriller Allied.

That didn’t sit well with Brad. “When they argued over Marion the last time, Brad lashed back at Angelina, telling her he was done with her insecurities and fits of jealousy. He said she was suffocating him,” the friend tells In Touch exclusively.

Now, just weeks after marking their second wedding anniversary, “The marriage is broken and Brad and Angelina’s $400 million divorce is underway,” the friend tells In Touch. “After 12 years and six kids together, it’s over.”

It is, by all accounts, over indeed.

So what of the rumors of an affair with Cotillard?  Those rumors are said to be “100 per cent false”, and the 40-year-old actress is said to be devastated by being thrown in the center of this bitter breakup (it should be noted that she has been in a relationship with actor and writer Guillaume Canet, 43, since 2007, and the couple have their five-year-old son, Marcel).

There is one person, however, who knew this day would come after Jolie and Pitt began dating in 2005 after they met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith.

That person is Jennifer Aniston

Us Weekly reports that Aniston said “Yeah, that’s karma for you!” when discussing the news of the split.

The “Friends” star, who was married to Pitt for five years, “admittedly feels sort of satisfied about Brad and Angelina’s split,” Us reported.

Aniston and Pitt were Hollywood’s hottest couple in the late 90s. The inseparable pair married in 2000 and divorced five years later, as the Fight Club actor embarked on his long term relationship with Jolie.

“She always got the sense that something would happen with them eventually,” the source told the mag.

“She didn’t feel that Angelina was truly the one who Brad was meant to stay with. She always felt that Angelina was too complex for him. He’s a pretty simple guy.”

And in the end, she was right.

Aniston — now happily married to Justin Theroux — was the one that got her fairytale ending and provided proof that nice girls don’t finish last.

Nearly a decade later, Aniston surely must feel that some sense of satisfaction
