After only one year off the air, the singing competition show American Idol has been picked up by ABC, who officially announced that the TV show will be back later this year.

ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said in a statement that ‘It was a ‘pop culture staple, that left the air too soon.’

While no details about the show are known, long-time host Ryan Seacrest, who just took a hosting post with Kelly Rippa in New York, revealed that he didn’t know if he’d have time to do the show, which was originally shot in L.A. Industry insiders suggest that’s just a negotiating ploy on Ryans part but the bigger question is how this dated show will do against the new reality shows, namely ‘The Voice.’
