In the summer months your hair takes a beating, what with the sun, chlorine and salt water. We asked hair stylist to the stars, Mika Fowler at the  Kim Vo salon in Beverly Hills for some handy, dandy tips to keeping our locks healthy and shinny this season.

First, she recommends using some ‘before’ protection in the form of a spray (we like the ‘Phytoplage Protective Sun oil ) that creates a barrier for your hair from the UV rays of the sun. You protect your skin with sunscreen so why not your hair?

After the pool or Ocean, rinse the hair immediately if possible.

‘ Avoid that hair dryer’, warns Mika. “You want as little heat as possible, so try some wet styles (shown below) and use some of the new leave-in conditioners.’ We like the brand-new Healthy Sexy ‘Soya Want It All’ a  lightweight leave-in conditioner containing a Soy, Cocoa and Argan Oil blend. Or, try the Schwarzkopf Moisture Kick Spray conditioner which repairs hair while not leaving it too heavy.

We throw a can in our beach bag and spray liberally on our hair after rinsing, often skipping the shampoo unless it’s really dirty (say, every three days.) You can also try a dry shampoo in between washes to save your hair from drying out.

‘For your summer cut, try a more casual, layered style,’ recommends Mika. ‘It’s easier to care for, doesn’t tangle, and a fringed bang is always sexy .’

And here’s Mika’s easy up-do for summer that you can style when wet (and save damaging your hair!)
